The CSR departments of companies in the UK were asked in a survey to identify the greatest threats to business sustainability, and the most significant barriers to CSR programmes. The responses to these questions were then used to develop a survey instrument for use in interviews with individual board members of UK companies. The purpose of this case study was to analyse the results of the survey for UK corporations. The report identified factors that companies believe have a negative impact on their CSR activities and gives specific recommendations for implementing initiatives that may have a positive impact on corporate social and environmental performance. UK regulatory support for CSR This report was produced by the Community of Learning and Knowledge, a UK-based charity and think tank that supports the development of effective corporate social responsibility (CSR) practice and policy in the UK and globally. The research indicates that the challenges to CSR in the UK are greater than the report suggests. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, the survey relied upon self-report from the directors of UK companies and not from their external CSR departments. The validity of the survey results therefore depends upon the ability of the respondents to accurately remember past activities and attitudes. The low response rate means that the results may not reflect the views of all companies and thus the findings should be considered only as a part of a larger body of evidence. They also indicate that CSR issues can be very context-specific. This means that a generic CSR strategy may not work in every company and CSR initiatives must be tailored to the specific situation in each company. It is also notable that the proportion of respondents who reported various types of CSR activities was quite small. This means that there is a risk that the findings may reflect the views of a small percentage of a particular industry sector.
